KENNETH L. SMITH, born in Hot Springs, Arkansas, has long been involved with the outdoors and conservation. In the mid-1960s Ken explored the Buffalo River to write this book, which introduced the public to the river’s pristine beauty, and has continued to be involved with the river and its environs since federal legislation established the Buffalo as the first national river in 1972. In the 1980s he began work coordinating the design, construction, and maintenance of more than 120 miles of trail in the Buffalo River watershed, including the 80-mile-long Buffalo River Trail. Ken’s popular reference book, Buffalo River Handbook, appeared in its second edition in 2018.
