Highlands Chapter Dayhike:  Pine Hollow and Round Rocks in the Upper Buffalo Wilderness

Name of Hike:   Pine Hollow Round Rocks Loop
Location:  Upper Buffalo Wilderness, Ozark National Forest near Mossville AR, south of Boxley Valley
Type of Hike:  Bushwhack (non-trail hike), day hike, loop
Hike Distance:  4.3 mi
Vertical Elevation Difference:  700 ft
Rating:  Difficult, due to a combination of elevation change (700 feet), absence of trail, undergrowth, uneven terrain, and scrambling over steep slopes and large boulders.
Features:  On this bushwhack in the Upper Buffalo Wilderness we will explore a geologic oddity in Pine Hollow.  In a jumble of rock slabs in a narrow hollow, large round rocks are embedded in the slabs. These metamorphic rocks, the size of basketballs, are called concretions.  Many have fallen to the bottom of a ravine.  We will see other interesting rock formations and several waterfalls.

Meeting Place and Time:

• Meet at 8:55 a.m. at the Kings River Country Store in Marble AR; or,
• Meet at 9:45 a.m. at the Mossville church on AR Hwy 21 four miles south of Boxley Valley

Comment:  Bring water, snack, lunch, rain gear, gloves, and wear hiking boots/shoes.  Hiking poles may be helpful.  No pets are allowed on any hikes, and children under 12 years are discouraged and must be accompanied by a guardian.   Participants are required to sign a liability release at the trailhead to take part in any Ozark Society outing.  Everyone is welcome to hike with the OSHC, whether an Ozark Society member or not.
