Devil’s Canyon Loop

Day, Date:  Monday, February 17, 2025  (RESCHEDULED from Saturday, February 15)

Type of Hike:  Dayhike, Bushwhack, Loop
Hiking Distance:  3.5 miles+

Total Elevation Gain/Loss:  400 feet
Rating:  Difficult due to scrambling over rocks, stream crossings, scrambling down steep slopes, absence of trail.
Features:  This “scenic area” is rugged, but it is located near the highway and is easy to get to—at least to the edge of it.  Hiking around inside the area is another matter—there are no trails, and the terrain is challenging, but the rewards are
plenty.  There are 3 waterfalls, and we depart the canyon through a bear crack.  For more info see Tim Ernst (Arkansas Waterfalls, 2d Ed., pp. 245-247).

Meeting Place and Time:

• Meet at First Care Medical South parking lot at the south end of Crossover Road in Fayetteville for carpooling for an 8:30 a.m. departure; or
• Meet in Fern AR at the bend in AR Hwy 215 at 9:30 a.m.

Driving Distance:  One-way driving distance from Fayetteville to the Fern AR community is 45 miles.  The trailhead is two miles beyond on dirt road.

Comment:  Bring water, snack, lunch, rain gear, gloves, and wear hiking boots/shoes.  Hiking poles may be helpful.  No pets are allowed on any hikes, and children under 12 years are discouraged and must be accompanied by a guardian.   Participants are required to sign a liability release at the trailhead to take part in any Ozark Society outing.  Everyone is welcome to hike with the OSHC, whether an Ozark Society member or not.
